Breaking the camel's back - What was your straw?

What did it for you? What did you discover/learn/realize that finally tipped the scales, toppled the blocks, pulled away the blindfold, or broke the Mo'-Camel's back? Your sharing may bring others to the tipping point of truth, and even if it doesn't you'll still probably feel better for having gotten it off your chest.

The really funny thing is that I didn't really question Mormonism at all until the package arrived in my mail that day in August, 1977.  Then, as I began to read, and found huge discrepancies between what Mormonism had taught me along with the church's interpretation of their biblical "proof texts" and what the Bible actually said, I started reading on my own.  I'd look up a proof text, then read what came before and after it in the Bible, and in every instance, what the church had told me the Bible meant by a certain verse was in direct opposition to what the context of that verse showed that it meant!  Studying all one day and late into the night, and then again the following day, I came to a biblical understanding of who Jesus is - and He does not resemble the Mormon Jesus in any way at all, other than the name!  Then, with verses like John 8:24, I realized that unless I recognized Jesus for who He really is and accepted THAT Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I was headed for an eternity in hell!  By mid-afternoon that second day, my mind felt like a spinning top, and my emotions were all over the place.  I was furious and frightened... furious at having been deceived and at having so gullibly accepted what I had been taught without checking the facts, and frightened because I'd been told that if I ever left the Mormon Church, that it was an unforgivable sin and I'd go to hell.  At the same time, I was falling in love with the real Jesus - God Incarnate who loved me so much that if I'd been the only person who needed to be saved, He would have gone through that indescribable agaony of the cross just for me!  It took me several years to "clean out" all the lies that were engrained in my mind and replace them with the truth from the Bible, but that long and often confusing journey was worth every moment!  I praise God today for "waking me up" that day and opening my eyes so I could see all the lies for what they were.

The #1 reason that the LDS church is false:  Joseph Smith (J.S.) elevates himself to and/or above God.Detailed proof of my #1 reason - according to LDS Documentation?  [Note:  this is paraphrased below for conciseness, but full references are provided.]J.S. himself boldly stated that he did more than Jesus ever did to keep a church together.  History of Church V. 6, pp 408-409…412.   (Note the discrepancy to D&C 135:3, where the church “tones” it down.)Not only does J.S. elevate himself above Jesus, he holds the keys to the mansion where God and Christ reside.  Journal of Discourses V. 7, 289; 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide p 142; JSF Doc. Of Salvation Vol 1 pg 190, etc. The "Real" Facts:God is infinitely greater than we are.  The Bible teaches that the Father is God, that Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God.  Although we may speak of them as three distinct entities, they make up the Godhead which is God.Further, consider these three versus:John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Conclusions:J.S. was not and is not more successful than Jesus (God’s son, an entity of the Godhead).  God’s word is not and was not so weak (essentially unsuccessful) that the church fell into apostasy.  Further, there is/was no need for a restoration. Even further, J.S. does not hold the keys to God’s mansion.  J.S. is a false prophet.  The Mormon Church is a huge fraud. My heart aches that so many people have been led astray.Let me reiterate, not only is J.S. a false prophet, but he boasts that he is more successful than Jesus…and that he holds the keys to the mansion where God and Christ reside.  BLASPHEMY That’s my #1 reason.  Note:  I have many other reasons for leaving, notably:  numerous contradictions with the Bible, plural god teachings, polygamy, polygamy as a requirement for exaltation, J.S. lying about polygamy before ‘declaring’ it as a revelation, false prophecies, J.S. fabricating the BOM with use of seer stones, the book of Abraham, the ‘restoration’ story, current corporate structure and investments which include shopping mall…. Etc.  Essentially, all of the reasons can be categorized as blasphemy.

Thanks for this - its amazing how different JS looks when one steps back and looks at the complete panorama of his life and claims. So true that JS has all the biblical characteristics of a false prophet, and yet LDS people are wiling to defend and justify his actions and statements.  Hopefully this spiritual blindness of LDS people moves us to compassion and a desire to give them a taste of true love and acceptance in Jesus.
